The city's list of work that always needs a building permit doesn't name floor coatings, so the Pompano Beach Building Department is the office that settles it for your job. When it isn't clear, we ask them instead of guessing, and when a permit is needed, we take care of it with the city before work starts. We're licensed and insured.

Structural work, exterior windows and doors, and electrical, plumbing, mechanical and gas line work always need a standard building permit in Pompano Beach, whatever the job costs. Work can't start until that permit is issued. On a floor job, that usually only comes up if you're also moving an outlet or changing a floor drain.

It can qualify if it's a single-family home, the Building part of the job stays under $7,500 and the work stays clear of structural, electrical, plumbing, mechanical and gas systems. I can't give you a fair number until I've seen the floor and tested the slab, because most of the cost here is in the prep. A slab carrying old tile glue, sealer or cracks takes more grinding and repair than clean concrete, and a decorative flake or metallic finish costs more than a plain one. Your estimate lays it out in writing with the prep, the product and the finish, so you can see where the money goes.

Most of the time goes into prep and cure, so I give you a schedule after I've tested the slab instead of guessing. Grinding off old glue or repairing cracks adds time, a coating has to cure before you walk or drive on it, and if the job needs a permit, work waits until it's issued.
